What a road it’s been for current UFC women’s Bantamweight titleholder Holly Holm.
She went from not being ready for a 135-pound title shot to shutting down the keyboard warriors to claiming Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gold in a nine month period.
After knocking out previous champion and undefeated mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Ronda Rousey in stunning fashion (video) back in November, “Preacher’s Daughter” saw her stock rise to astronomical levels and for that she notched two Bazzie awards.
Holm, 34, racked up ‘Knockout of the Year,’ as well as ‘Female Fighter of the Year’ for her continued dominance of the women’s MMA scene. Overall, Holm went 3-0 in 2015, with victories over Raquel Pennington, Marion Reneau and Rousey.
Currently, the pride of Albuquerque, N.M., is enjoying the fruits of her labor, while probably making more media appearances than she is used to, all before running it back with “Rowdy” at a historic UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) in July 2016.
Time will tell if that actually occurs, due to health concerns on the part of Rousey and if that were not to come to fruition, there’s a “Cupcake” out there, who’s more than eagerfor a shot at Holm.
Prominent names who also took home awards on last night’s Inside MMA show were Demetrious Johnson (Male Fighter of the Year), Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald (Fight of the Year), as well as Thomas Almeida (Breakthrough Fighter of the Year).
Here’s to an equally unpredictable and exhilarating year of MMA action in 2016!
