On Saturday night the UFC rides into the south Texas border-town of Hidalgo. The main and co-main events see four top ten fighters looking to stake their claim at elite status within their divisions. Outside of that you have a lot of fighters looking to truly announce themselves on MMA’s grandest stage, as well as a few who are hoping to prove they still belong.
In the main event 7th ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier (-165) is a decent favorite over 10th ranked Michael Johnson (+145). In the co-main the bookies give the edge to 10th ranked middleweight Derek Brunson (-185), over Uriah Hall (+165) who is ranked on spot above, at 9th. Late replacement, and recent WSOF featherweight champ, Rick Glenn (+260) is a heavy underdog versus the vet Evan Dunham (-350). But the biggest outsider, according to the oddsmakers, is Erick Montano (+350) who takes on Lookin’ For A Fight alum Randy Brown (-420).
I’m picking the Diamond to shine in the Lone Star State. The key stat that jumps out to me is that – according to UFC.com – Poirier lands 50.51% of his significant strikes (Johnson lands 35.77%). Though he’s never been stopped with strikes, if Johnson can’t stop Poirier landing his usual barrage – he’s not gonna like what the judges have to say.
