Today IBO, WBC, IBF and WBA Super Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin took to twitter to call out his next opponent. Rumors have been circulating for weeks now that GGG could potentially be fighting British fighter, Chris Eubank Jr., who successfully defended his British middleweight title for the first time Saturday evening in London with a fourth-round stoppage of the previously unbeaten Tom Doran.
Eubank Jr., has vocalized over the last year his desire to face the feared kazakhstan and now his wish may come true this fall.
Speaking with Boxing Correspondent, Radio Rahim, Eubank, Jr. showed little to no fear at the idea of GGG.
“I believe he is a very hard hitter, very strong, he’s a great fighter and I’m not taking anything away from him. But as far as speed, as far as technique and defense, I believe I’m the better man inside the ring than he is.”
“I’ve sparred heavyweights… if they can’t knock me out Gennady Golovkin can’t knock me out.”
So if this should happen the question is where will the fight be taking place? The obvious is where ever GGG want’s it to be since he has the upper hand in negotiations but seeing how he mentioned Sky Sports in his tweet and has mentioned on multiple occasions that he would go over to England for a fight, I can definitely see Golovkin fighting in London solely for his International fan base.
Post Eubank-Doran fight, head of Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, told Sky Sports he believes a Golovkin vs. Eubank, Jr., fight could be made this week. And I believe so as well because Golovkin has never been one to wait months to announce his next opponent and it has already been two months since his last fight.
More than likely the reason it had taken GGG’s team as long as they have to announce an opponent was the waiting around to hear what Canelo Alvarez was going to do. But now that Alvarez officially announced that his next fight is September 17th against WBO World Super Weltereight Champion Liam Smith in Las Vegas, it’s only a matter of days before Golovkin and his camp to make an announcement.
