Kell Brook has targeted a December showdown with Amir Khan

KELL BROOK has targeted a December showdown with Amir Khan after climbing back from ‘rock-bottom’.

Brook has not boxed since he lost his IBF world title to Erroll Spence at his beloved Bramall Lane on May 27.

The Sheffield ace says the defeat convinced him to hang up his gloves and he was already planning a life after boxing.

But, after months of soul searching, Brook has drawn up a three-fight plan to ensure he ends his career on a high.

He has lost his last two fights, but insists his defeat at the hands of middleweight Gennady Golovkin in September 2016 was not too hard to swallow.

However, losing to Spence sent him on a downward spiral that he almost did not recover from.

“That one felt like my first defeat,” he said.

“We all knew the score with the Golovkin fight, it wasn’t normal. He was the man at middleweight, nobody would fight him and I jumped up two divisions to fight him.

“But losing to Spence, my mandatory at welterweight, it done me. It absolutely done me.

“I’ve been in a dark place basically ever since. I’ve only just jumped over the fence and now I’m very positive and happy about my life again.

“I’m just so happy I had my family round me, they were strong and got me through it.

“It was very tough, very tough for me. I really hit rock bottom.”

The 31-year-old will make his return on March 3 at Sheffield’s FlyDSA Arena against Sergey Rabchenko at his new weight of 154lbs.

After that, the 31-year-old is hoping to box again in the summer before finally securing a showdown with long-time verbal sparring partner Khan.

The I’m a Celebrity star is also promoted by Eddie Hearn meaning a Battle of Britain between the pair should be closer than ever.

Brook added: “I’m back in my groove and I am going to show it against Rabchenko. There are no excuses and I feel like I’ve still got plenty left to give.

“I have got one more year, that will be three fights.

“After Rabchenko I want to be out in July or August and then I want Khan in December.

“I’d agree it feels more possible than it has for a long time just because he’s now with Matchroom.

“Even Khan has said that it will happen so that makes me think ‘yep, it will’.”
