With rumors spreading about Kurt Angle’s impending return to Raw, we make the case for why he should return to SmackDown Live instead.
Kurt Angle’s name made tremors throughout the WWE universe when the Olympic Gold medalist’s name would get announced as the first entrant in this year’s Hall of Fame class. After many years away from the company he once called ‘home’ Angle would finally find his place among the all-time greats. To many, this would come as a surprise, as fans expected Angle to make a surprise return during Royal Rumble instead.
We had reported earlier about WWE’s potential return plans for Kurt Angle. As such, Angle is set to return on the post-WrestleMania edition of Raw. Many including our own Jay Sichler have been pitching for Angle to take up the mantle of General Manager of Raw. While it would be a great way to commence his return to WWE, a move like that would leave some great stories untold and unfulfilled.

To begin with, Angle could be used as so much more than an authority figure. Regardless of his age and history of injuries, Angle is one of the best in between the ropes. Oh, it’s true, it’s damn true! Restricting him to just an authority role could take away so many storylines from the WWE universe to begin with. Moreover, placing him on SmackDown would seem like the ideal place for Angle.
To begin with, ever since rumors of Angle’s return speculated, fans have been wanting to see him mix it up with American Alpha. It is a perfect match on paper to say the least.
Moreover, Jason Jordan and Chad Gable would benefit hugely by having Angle in their corner. Having a veteran in their corner is one advantage. More importantly, it would help the young duo to connect with the audience in a better way. They are a set of great wrestlers who are so close to breaking out into huge stars. They share a passion for tag team wrestling that is not exhibited in today’s WWE. Lastly, their gimmick and backgrounds make them excellent cadets for a revived team Angle.
Angle has always made sense as a team blue guy. He would be put to better use on the SmackDown roster. Raw‘s authority related drama is not an ideal place for Angle to thrive. He would much rather enjoy the spotlight better on SmackDown‘s much thinner roster. Apart from Angle and American Alpha which is a match made in heaven, he could also tangle with the likes of AJ Styles. The two have had phenomenal matches in TNA.
But the biggest thing to come out of the blue brand for Angle would be one final showdown with John Cena. The face that runs the place made his debut against him. Now well over a decade later, they stand on totally different grounds. Cena has reached the pinnacle of his WWE career. Angle would be the returning veteran who saw Cena’s potential before anybody else.
Of course, at the end of the day, none of this could matter. Raw would need a new GM, as Foley takes time away for surgery. Where it stands as of now, Angle would be the one to replace him. However, for the greater good, he should move to SmackDown instead.
