Brazilian MMA fighter shot, likely paralyzed after armed robbery

Henrique Alves de Aquino (1-1), a bantamweight from Renovacao Fight Team, was shot Friday morning during an armed robbery in the northeast area of Rio de Janeiro. The MMA fighter, who also works as a bus driver, was shot when two teenagers tried to steal a couple people at a bus stop.

According to RFT, Alves, a black belt in luta livre, was rushed to the Getulio Vargas hospital and is out of danger, but will likely be paralyzed since the bullet hit his spine.

“We’re living a complicated situation where you can’t even leave your home to work,” Alves’ coach Marcio Cromado wrote on his Facebook page.

Alves made his MMA debut in 2011, defeating Marcos Martins via first-round submission at Beija-Flor Fight Combat. He hasn’t fought since 2012, when he lost to Ricardo Dias via knockout at Fatality Arena 2.
