With just two weeks to go until Conor McGregor’s featherweight title unification bout with Jose Aldo at UFC 194, the promotion have opened their vault to remind us of the Dubliner’s best moments.
At this point, so much water has passed under the bridge that McGregor’s bout with Dustin Poirier feels like it went down far longer than 15 months ago.
But, it was September 27, 2014, when the ‘Notorious’ finally fought under the bright lights Las Vegas for the first time.
Having dispatched of Diego Brandao in less than a round just two months previously at the then 02 Arena in Dublin, McGregor was quickly matched with the formidable Poirier, a man with infinitely more experience at the elite level and the fighter expected to put an end to the Irish hype train.
However, from the moment they came to face to face at the show’s first press events, McGregor got straight to the psychological warfare, and the American took the bait hook, line and sinker.
When the weight-ins came around, Poirier looked unhinged and emotionally exhausted, and so, ‘Mystic Mac’ would fulfil his prophesy of separating him from consciousness inside the opening frame.
McGregor would not be underestimated again.
