The next pay-per-view (PPV) on the WWE schedule is the Battleground event set to take place on Sun., July 23, 2017, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is the fifth annual event but the first as a SmackDown Live exclusive show.
We're just one week out from bell time and the card is filled out:
Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton (WWE championship, Punjabi Prison match)
When Orton showed up on SmackDown threatening repeated assault if he wasn’t given a rematch for the WWE championship, Shane McMahon decided to give it to him under the condition that Mahal would pick the stipulation. He chose a Punjabi Prison match.
John Cena vs. Rusev (Flag match)
Cena made his big return to television on the July 4 episode of SmackDown, which meant they spent less time on his status as a “free agent” and focused on how American he is, immediately booking him in a feud with Rusev. Naturally, that means a Flag match. Murica.
The Usos vs. The New Day (SmackDown tag team championship)
When Jimmy and Jey ran from their last title match, electing to lose via countout to keep their titles, you knew they would be getting a rematch. This is that rematch.
AJ Styles vs. Kevin Owens (US championship)
Styles won the title at a house show at Madison Square Garden, done to surprise the crowd, and because they had already planned a match they simply went ahead with it.
Women’s 5-Way Elimination match
Charlotte, Becky Lynch, Natayla, Lana, and Tamina will wrestle in an elimination match that will see the winner go on to challenge Naomi for the SmackDown women’s championship at SummerSlam.
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin
They’ve been feuding, so they’ll have a match.
